Gillingham v Peterborough United: The Football League's entertainers

22 January 2016

The two highest-scoring teams in The Football League meet on Saturday, when Gillingham host Peterborough United in Sky Bet League 1.

The Gills moved to the top of the scoring charts last weekend after netting twice against Doncaster Rovers, taking them to 53 goals in 27 matches this term.

Posh - who have played a game less - have hit 52, but were shut out last week in a goalless stalemate at home to Southend United.

The big 50!

These two sides are the only teams to reach the landmark figure across all three Football League divisions. Fellow League 1 promotion hopefuls Coventry City are next in line with 47 goals this term.

In the Sky Bet Championship, Hull City are the most prolific team with 44 goals, while Northampton Town are the highest scorers in Sky Bet League 2 with 46.

Attack - the best form of defence?

It's certainly working out pretty well for both teams, particularly the Gills, who have spent plenty of time at the Sky Bet League 1 summit. They currently occupy third spot, but are only three points adrift of leaders Burton Albion.

Peterborough sit sixth, in the final Play-Off place, seven points behind the top five. Graham Westley's arrival was met with some scepticism, but he hasn't just brought entertainment since taking charge at London Road - he's also brought points. The club have climbed 12 places under Westley's guidance, gaining 33 points from his 18 games in charge.

Who's been scoring?

Bradley Dack has proved to be Gillingham's main weapon this term, hitting 11 League goals from midfield. The strikers are in form too; Rory Donnelly scored both goals in the draw with Doncaster, taking him to double figures for the campaign. Donnelly has four in his last three, and Dominic Samuel - on loan from Reading - has four in his last six.

Peterborough's top scorer, Conor Washington, departed for QPR earlier this week, but he's not been the only one firing in the goals in 2015/16. The midfield have chipped in with their fair share - Marcus Maddison, Jon Taylor and Erhun Oztumer have five apiece, a figure matched by forward Souleymane Coulibaly. Lee Angol takes over from Washington as the most prolific marksman, having hit seven goals in his maiden Posh season.
