And after a run of eight straight Sky Bet League 1 defeats, Chesterfield have now secured back-to-back wins and taken seven points from their last three games.
"This was going to be our biggest test," Wilson told chesterfield-fc.co.uk.
"Rochdale are a good team at home and you can see why in the latter stages of the game when they put us under a lot of pressure.
"I can't praise the performance highly enough, coming here and playing the way we did with the amount of chances that we've had - with goals disallowed and the sending off and the general way that we played - the game was fantastic.
"I can't believe that anybody who saw the game as an independent wouldn't say that we deserved to win the game."
Chesterfield are now five points clear of the relegation places as a result of their latest victory, and play fifth-placed Wigan Athletic in their next fixture.
