Capital One Cup Semi-Final first leg preview

4 January 2016

A trip to Wembley is now firmly in sight as the Capital One Cup Semi-Final first legs take place this week, with four teams battling for a place in February's Final.

Stoke City host Liverpool in the first instalment of the semi-finals on Tuesday, with the action kicking off at 8pm in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Mark Hughes' City have been going well but lost 2-1 at the hands of West Bromwich Albion at the weekend – just their third defeat in 13 matches.

Their route to the semis has included penalty successes over Luton Town and Chelsea, and victories over Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday.

Liverpool also suffered a Premier League defeat at the weekend, against West Ham United, continuing their inconsistent form.

But the eight-time League Cup winners thumped Southampton 6-1 in the previous round of the Capital One Cup, after a fourth round triumph over Bournemouth and a shoot-out success against Sky Bet League 2 outfit Carlisle United in Round 3.

A day later, at 8pm on Wednesday, it's the turn of Everton and Manchester City, who meet at Goodison Park.

The travelling City, who won the Capital One Cup in 2014, are the highest-placed side left in this season's competition as they sit third in the top flight, losing once in their last six.

Their run to the semi-finals has been convincing, having put four goals past Sunderland and Hull City – both resulting in 4-1 wins – alongside a 5-1 victory against Crystal Palace.

They also beat Everton 2-0 in the league in August, giving them the edge in the overall head-to-head record between these two – 67 wins to 66 - ahead of what will be their 178th encounter.

The Toffees have struggled somewhat over recent weeks, recording only two wins in their most recent eight outings.

One of those was a 2-0 Capital One Cup Quarter-Final victory at Middlesbrough, though, which followed positive results against Barnsley (5-3), Reading (2-1) and Norwich (4-3 on penalties) in the previous rounds.
