PNE v Sheffield Wednesday: A happy anniversary for Simon Grayson?

19 February 2016

When Simon Grayson walked in the door at Deepdale, Preston North End were 17th in Sky Bet League 1, eight points above the relegation zone.

Exactly three years and one day later, the Lilywhites are 11th in the Sky Bet Championship after winning five of their last eight matches, losing only once in that period.

Promotion to the Championship under Grayson came last season, courtesy of a 4-0 Play-Off Final win over Swindon Town, which was his third Play-Off success as a manager.

His Preston win percentage to date is 47.34, and a victory on Saturday over Sheffield Wednesday would be his 81st as the Deepdale boss.

It'll be far from easy, given the Owls are undefeated in their last eight league games, taking 19 points, but Grayson is relishing the encounter, which will be played in front of a sizeable crowd given the fact the visitors have sold out their 5,700 allocation.

“It should be a good game,” he told pnefc.net. “When you look at the stats of the last eight games I think they are the form team and we are second at the moment, so it just proves how well we are doing when you look at the size of Sheffield Wednesday as a club and the budget that they have.

“They have some really talented players – Forestieri, Bannan etc – so it is a big test for us, but we have thrived on the big games. It will be a fantastic atmosphere.

“The players have done extremely well and on Saturday afternoon they have to do whatever it takes to go and win another game, and by Saturday night hopefully they will have put on a performance and built on the run and the success we have had recently.

“We want to carry on winning games, keep trying to get up the table and see where it takes us.”
