Penalty hero: Scott Shearer saves two penalties as Mansfield defeat Morecambe

8 February 2016

Mansfield Town goalkeeper Scott Shearer saved two penalty kicks on Saturday to help Mansfield Town secure a 2-1 win over Morecambe at Field Mill.

The former Coventry City, Bristol Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers stopper first denied Shaun Miller before repeating his antics by palming away Paul Mullin's effort six minutes from time.

The hosts had to come from behind to seal maximum points having conceded a goal inside the first minute, with Kevin Ellison on target for the visitors.

However, Matty Blair and Krystian Pearce both struck before the interval to give the Stags the advantage, with Shearer playing his part to ensure it wasn't surrendered.

Speaking to the club's official website, he said: “I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game when two penalties have been given.

“It’s just nice to win the game – it shows the character we’ve got in the team. We’ve done it last Tuesday night to the same team, we came back very late on.

"In this game we’ve done exactly the same, we’ve relaxed ourselves, got ourselves composed and got back in the game with two really good goals."

The result moved Mansfield into fifth place in Sky Bet League 2, just four points shy of Oxford United, who currently occupy the third and final automatic promotion place.

Manager Adam Murray added: "You couldn’t write the script with us conceding early at the minute at home – even after we conceded, the noise was incredible, it felt like we were going for something.

"When we’re like that here it’s a real force.”
