In-form Wigan Athletic aiming for nine unbeaten in Sky Bet League 1

5 February 2016

Wigan Athletic's recent form has put the club within touching distance of an automatic promotion position in Sky Bet League 1, but face a tricky test on Matchday 30 against Sheffield United.

The club's unbeaten run could be extended to nine games if they can avoid defeat at Bramall Lane, a venue they haven't lost at since October 1991.

The Latics have scored 19 goals during this spell, netting three times in each of their last four home fixtures.

As a result, Gary Caldwell's men are now fourth in the division, just five points behind leaders Burton Albion although the table-toppers have a game in hand.

Wigan and Sheffield United have only met each other 17 times in the past and, despite their good record at Bramall Lane, the Latics have won just five of those meetings.

The Blades have seven victories to their name with five draws being played out.

One of those occurred just a few weeks ago at the DW Stadium, where United came from three goals down to draw 3-3 in a thrilling game.

The managers

Wigan boss Gary Caldwell told the club's official website: "We are on a good run so we are looking forward to every game but it's getting to that stage of the season where you feel that every three points is crucial.

"The team are confident, they look fit and hungry and the games can't come quick enough at the minute."

Nigel Adkins, meanwhile, told Sheffield United's official website: "Wigan are an excellent side, they have so many attacking threats and they are always likely to score goals, but they will be saying exactly the same thing about us.

"It was an exciting match when we last met, we didn't deserve to be 3-0 down, but we showed on that evening the spirit, resilience and togetherness within the squad, we never know when we are beaten and we proved it then, Wigan will have that in the back of their minds on Saturday.

"But we need to defend much better, a couple of decisions went against us at the DW Stadium, but overall we could have prevented a couple of the goals."
