Football League statement: Phil Gartside

10 February 2016

The Football League are saddened to hear of the passing of long-standing Bolton Wanderers chairman Phil Gartside.

Phil joined the board of Bolton Wanderers in 1988, and served as chairman from 1999.

He oversaw the club’s First Division Play-Off triumph of 2001, which was followed by a number of successful Premier League years and two UEFA Cup campaigns.

He sadly passed away after a short and brave battle with cancer.

Football League Chairman Greg Clarke said: “This is a very sad news for everyone at Bolton Wanderers and across the English game.

“Phil will always be associated with one of the most memorable periods in Bolton’s proud history and he will be missed by his many friends and colleagues. Our thoughts are with his family.”
