Sky Bet EFL: Matchday round-up

31 December 2016

Newcastle United will end 2016 top of the Sky Bet Championship thanks to their 3-1 victory at home to Nottingham Forest on Matchday 24.

The Magpies reached the summit after former leaders Brighton & Hove Albion had their match against Cardiff City postponed due to poor weather conditions - circumstances which also struck Reading and Fulham’s game, with the score level at 0-0 at half-time.

Huddersfield sit fourth after a late Nahki Wells free-kick salvaged a point against Blackburn Rovers, then come Leeds United in fifth, who drew with Aston Villa, while Sheffield Wednesday are sixth after they scored an injury-time leveller to pick up a point at Preston North End.

Birmingham City recorded their first point under Gianfranco Zola, coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Barnsley on New Year's Eve, and Queens Park Rangers ended a six-game losing streak by beating Wolves 2-1.

Brentford and Norwich City then brought 2016 to a close by drawing 0-0 live on Sky Sports in an evening kick-off.

Sheffield United moved top of Sky Bet League One on New Year’s Eve as they beat Northampton Town 1-0.

Kieron Freeman was the goalscoring hero for Chris Wilder’s side, and the three points against the manager’s former employers moved them to the top of the pile, above previous leaders Scunthorpe United.

The Iron actually dropped down to third as they lost 2-1 to Bolton Wanderers, who now sit second.

Rochdale, Bradford City and Southend United are the other three sides in the Play-Off picture.

Dale saw off Shrewsbury Town in their final match of 2016, making it four wins on the spin, while the latter two both drew, against Bury and Charlton Athletic respectively.

Peterborough are seventh on 37 points after a late draw against Coventry, while Fleetwood, Millwall and Bristol Rovers are close by, after all winning their final game of the year.

Fleetwood’s victory came against Oldham Athletic, who sit in the relegation places alongside Coventry, Chesterfield and Shrewsbury.

Plymouth Argyle occupy top spot in Sky Bet League Two going into 2017 after they beat Crawley Town 2-0 on New Year’s Eve.

The Pilgrims had to be patient against Dermot Drummy’s side but found a way through in the second half, and the three points took them above previous leaders Doncaster Rovers.

Darren Ferguson’s men drew at Mansfield Town in an early kick-off and, with Carlisle United winning at 3pm, Rovers found themselves third at the close of 2016.

The Cumbrians beat Notts County 3-2 in a thrilling match, and that was the Magpies’ eighth successive defeat - form which sees them sit just above the bottom two at the turn of the year, narrowly above Cheltenham and Newport.

Cheltenham’s latest defeat came at the hands of Wycombe, who made it nine unbeaten to strengthen their grip on a Play-Off place.

Portsmouth (4th), Luton Town (5th) and Cambridge (7th) are the other three sides possessing a Play-Off berth heading in to the new year.
