Sky Bet Championship: New Year preview

30 December 2016

It's a busy period in the Sky Bet Championship heading into 2017, with matches taking place over what will be an exciting four days.

Sky Bet Championship: Matchday 24

Brighton & Hove Albion are one of three high-flying teams at home on Friday night, as the EFL action continues in the run up to New Year.

The leaders Brighton host Cardiff City, while their nearest rivals Newcastle United welcome Nottingham Forest to St. James’ Park.

Reading, who lie third, take on Fulham.

On New Year’s Eve, six more games take place, including an evening kick-off at Griffin Park, where Brentford host Norwich City in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Derby County are in fine form with seven successive home clean sheets, and struggling Wigan Athletic are the latest to visit the resurgent Rams.

Another of the sides in the bottom three, Blackburn Rovers, face a lunchtime meeting at Huddersfield Town in one of two Lancashire versus Yorkshire battles. The other comes at Deepdale, where Preston North End face off against Sheffield Wednesday.

Those games follow the Thursday night Sky Bet Championship double - Aston Villa and Leeds United played out a 1-1 draw and Burton Albion won at Rotherham United to move five points clear of the relegation zone.

Sky Bet Championship: Burton win away; Aston Villa and Leeds share spoils

Sky Bet Championship: Matchday 25

A full schedule greets us on the first Monday of 2017, and Sky Sports will be showing Blackburn versus Newcastle in a 3pm kick-off at Ewood Park.

Leeds and Rotherham meet in a Yorkshire derby, while high-flying Brighton and Reading both go on the road, to Fulham and Bristol City respectively.

Birmingham City have won their last four against Brentford, which will give Gianfranco Zola encouragement as the Italian seeks his first three-point haul at St Andrew’s, and Barnsley go to Nottingham Forest looking to avenge November’s 5-2 thrashing at Oakwell.
