Checkatrade Trophy: Round Two review

21 December 2016

Wolverhampton Wanderers U21s required penalties to get past Sunderland U21s in the first Round Two game, following a 1-1 draw across 90 minutes.

Nine other ties were played 24 hours later (Tuesday 6th December), with another three fixtures needing spot-kicks to decide them.

Blackpool edged Doncaster Rovers 8-7 in a shoot-out, while Sky Bet League One leaders Scunthorpe United got past Morecambe 5-3, and Oxford United edged Southend United 4-3 - all after drawing 1-1 in normal time.

Yeovil Town were the only side to claim a home victory across 90 minutes on Tuesday, when they came from behind to beat Milton Keynes Dons 4-1, and compound misery on Robbie Neilson in his first game in charge of the visitors.

That meant five wins on the road elsewhere. In an early kick-off, Swansea City U21s left Norwich City U21s with a 1-0 victory to ease the long journey back to South Wales, while Luton Town prevailed 3-2 in a see-saw game against Swindon Town at the County Ground.

Mansfield Town also secured a narrow 3-2 result at Carlisle United, the side that put five past them in Sky Bet League Two 10 days earlier, and Brighton & Hove Albion U21s and Chesterfield beat AFC Wimbledon and Rochdale respectively.

On Wednesday evening (7th December) there was no need for shoot-outs, as Bradford City and Coventry City picked 1-0 home wins to put out Cambridge United and Crawley Town, while Wycombe Wanderers travelled to Millwall and were 3-1 victors.

Six days later, Oldham Athletic came from behind on the road to knock out Walsall, and book a Round Three tie with Mansfield Town.

In the week approaching Christmas, Reading U21s and Southampton U21s went head-to-head and, with the scores level after 90 minutes, the Royals were 4-3 victors on penalties.
