Sky Bet EFL: Opening weekend round-up

6 August 2016

Norwich City confidently began life back in the EFL with a 4-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers in the Sky Bet Championship on Matchday 1.

Jacob Murphy opened the scoring with his first strike for the club before goals from Wes Hoolahan, Cameron Jerome and Steven Naismith.

It was a day to remember for Grant Ward, who scored a second-half hat-trick to guide Ipswich Town to a 4-2 win over newly-promoted Barnsley.

Burton Albion, also new boys in the division, fell to a thrilling 4-3 defeat at Nottingham in their first ever Sky Bet Championship game, while last season’s League One champions Wigan Athletic lost 2-1 at Bristol City.

That was the scoreline by which Huddersfield Town beat Brentford, and Wolves fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Rotherham United.

Reading edged Preston North End 1-0 after the emotional unveiling of the Eamonn Dolan Stand, and there were goalless draws at Birmingham City and Derby County.

On Friday, meanwhile, Fulham beat Newcastle United in the opening match of the season live on Sky Sports thanks to a Matt Smith header.

Kayden Jackson and Ben Davies were the Mariners’ goalscorers, giving them their first EFL victory since 1st May 2010.

There were also draws for the division’s other new boys, Cheltenham Town - they shared the spoils with Leyton Orient - while Portsmouth and Carlisle United also drew, as well as Hartlepool United and Colchester United, all with a 1-1 scoreline.

Elsewhere, Mansfield Town left it late to grab all three points over Newport County as Kevan Hurst struck a last-gasp winner for a 3-2 success - the same scoreline by which Accrington Stanley beat Doncaster Rovers.

Luton Town also hit the net three times, but without reply, against Plymouth Argyle, and Yeovil Town saw off Notts County 2-0.

That was the scoreline at Bloomfield Road, too, where Blackpool beat Exeter City, while Crawley Town toppled Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 and Crewe Alexandra overcame Stevenage 2-1 on the road.
