Sky Bet EFL: Matchday 5 round-up

27 August 2016

Huddersfield Town and Fulham are now the only undefeated teams in the Sky Bet Championship, having both recorded wins on Matchday 5.

The Terriers sit top with four victories from their first five games, after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at the John Smith’s Stadium, while Fulham grabbed a last-gasp winner to beat bottom side Blackburn Rovers by the same scoreline.

Bristol City also continued their solid start to the campaign, coming from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Ashton Gate, while Norwich City lost their first game of 2016/17 - 3-0 at Birmingham City.

On a day that saw no goalless draws in the EFL, Barnsley put four without reply past Rotherham United, Nottingham Forest beat Leeds United 3-1 and Reading stole all three points late on against Cardiff City.

There were also victories for Ipswich Town and Queens Park Rangers, against Preston North End and Wigan Athletic respectively

Bolton Wanderers’ status as the only EFL team to hold a 100 per cent winning record this season came to an end after they were held 1-1 away at Charlton Athletic.

The Trotters were in front for the majority of the game at The Valley after Gary Madine’s 53rd-minute goal, but Ademola Lookman’s wonder strike in second-half stoppage time clinched the Addicks a point.

A big chunk of the afternoon entertainment came at the Banks’s Stadium, where Walsall and Bury played out a 3-3 draw. The hosts were 3-0 to the good by half-time, but Bury launched a stunning fightback to leave with a share of the spoils.

Gillingham were also the subject of a mesmeric comeback. Trailing 2-0 to Shrewsbury Town, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas’ brace got the Gills back on level terms before Max Ehmer hit a later winner.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Peterborough United, Port Vale, Millwall and Fleetwood Town, while Northampton Town drew for a remarkable fifth game in a row, at Coventry City.

The early fixture between Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers was locked at 0-0 before adverse weather conditions forced play to be abandoned at the County Ground.

There was an array of goals across Sky Bet League Two on Matchday 5, as Morecambe continued to set the pace at the top of the table.

The Shrimps were made to work for their latest three points, after trailing Accrington Stanley 2-0 at half-time. Billy Kee scored twice for the hosts, but Cole Stockton also netted a brace, either side of Kevin Ellison’s strike to seal a Lancashire derby victory for Jim Bentley's men.

The biggest scoreline of the day came at Blundell Park, where Grimsby Town thumped Stevenage 5-2. Omar Bogle grabbed his first EFL hat-trick to earn himself the star of the day prize on our social media channels.
