Sky Bet EFL: Matchday 4 round-up

21 August 2016

Huddersfield Town climbed to the top of the Sky Bet Championship following a last-gasp win in their all-Yorkshire clash with Barnsley.

Jonathan Hogg struck a brilliant late goal to clinch all three points for the unbeaten Terriers.

That wasn’t the only local derby taking place in Matchday 4, with Leeds overcoming Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 in the day’s early kick-off and Wolves triumphing 3-1 away at Midlands rivals Birmingham. On Sunday, meanwhile, Ipswich Town and Norwich City shared the points in the East Anglian derby.

Brighton were top going into the weekend, but they could only manage a 2-2 draw at Reading, a scoreline which proved popular. Blackburn and Burton, along with Fulham and Cardiff, also shared four goals.

The game of the afternoon saw Nottingham Forest defeat Wigan 4-3 in a thriller at the City Ground, while there were 1-0 wins for Newcastle and Rotherham.

Preston ran out 2-0 winners at QPR, before Derby and Aston Villa brought the action to a close with a goalless draw in the evening kick-off.

Bolton fought back from a goal down to beat Fleetwood 2-1 and maintain their 100 per cent start to the Sky Bet League One season.

Scunthorpe and Bradford are on their tails after both picking up victories in Matchday 4, with the Iron romping to a 5-0 triumph over Gillingham. The Bantams were made to work a bit harder, but a stirring second-half comeback saw them triumph 3-1 over Coventry.

That sole effort for the Sky Blues was their first of the new season, with Oldham and Shrewsbury also registering their maiden goals of 2016/17. The Latics picked up a 1-0 win at near-neighbours Bury, while the Shrews came back to defeat Chesterfield 2-1.

That was also a winning scoreline for Charlton, Millwall and Oxford — the latter two both scoring winners at the death.

Elsewhere, Swindon beat Port Vale 1-0, while the points were shared between Southend and Bristol Rovers, and Northampton and Wimbledon. The Cobblers have now gone 28 EFL games without defeat.

Morecambe notched a third successive win to take them to the top of Sky Bet League Two, with Kevin Ellison earning the Shrimps a 1-0 victory at Yeovil.

Three of the teams above them at the start of play — Luton, Colchester and Mansfield — all suffered defeats away at Stevenage, Portsmouth and Plymouth respectively.

Crawley were also on seven points going into Matchday 4, and a home point with Barnet put them second.

Exeter grabbed their first points of 2016/17 with an impressive 2-1 win away at Accrington Stanley, all those goals coming in a manic six-minute second-half spell. There were also wins on their travels for Doncaster, Leyton Orient and Notts County.

It was stalemate at Bloomfield Road where Blackpool nor Wycombe could find a way through, and Newport versus Crewe finished a goal apiece in the division’s other fixture.
