Sky Bet EFL: Matchday 3 round-up

17 August 2016

The first set of midweek fixtures of EFL Season 2016/17 produced drama aplenty, with numerous story lines across all three divisions.

On Tuesday, Brighton & Hove Albion moved to the Sky Bet Championship summit by cruising to a 3-0 victory over Rotherham United. Anthony Knockaert set the Seagulls on their way, before further goals from Glenn Murray and Tomer Hemed.

Norwich City kept up at the top after beating Bristol City 1-0, while Brentford, Derby County and Burton Albion also won - the Brewers’ 3-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday being their first in the Sky Bet Championship.

Huddersfield Town snatched a late leveller to earn a point at Aston Villa, while Leeds also left it late to draw with Fulham. Wigan versus Birmingham City and Wolves versus Ipswich also ended level.

Wednesday's action produced first wins of the season for Cardiff City and Newcastle United, while Barnsley beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 to deny them a place at the top of the Sky Bet Championship.

Rangers' defeat means no side in the division now has a 100 per cent record after three games of the new campaign.

Ched Evans was at the double for Chesterfield as they moved to the top of Sky Bet League One on Matchday 3, but only ahead of Wednesday's action.

The striker’s third and fourth goals in three games both came in the second half against Walsall and saw the Spireites move onto seven points.

Scunthorpe United, Gillingham, Port Vale and Bradford City are also on seven points. Three of those four sides picked up three points on Tuesday, with the Gills being the exception after their 1-1 draw at home to Swindon Town.

Peterborough United recorded the Result of the Night in the EFL by thrashing Millwall 5-1, while Southend United cruised to a 3-0 victory at Sheffield United. That was also the scoreline by which Charlton Athletic saw off Shrewsbury Town at The Valley.
