Review: EFL Cup Round Two review

24 August 2016

Accrington Stanley produced the shock of EFL Cup Round Two with a last-gasp victory over Burnley.

Matty Pearson struck in the last minute of extra-time to see the Sky Bet League Two outfit past their Lancastrian neighbours.

Twenty-four hours earlier, Northampton Town and Gillingham caused upsets by seeing off West Brom and Watford respectively.

The League One duo held their Premier League opposition in 90 minutes before advancing.

While the Cobblers saw off the Baggies 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, Justin Edinburgh’s Gills beat the Hornets 2-1 in extra-time.

Penalties were also needed at the iPro, where a mammoth shoot-out ended 14-13 to Derby County, seeing them advance past Carlisle United.

West Brom and Watford may have fell, but seven other Premier League teams advanced on Tuesday, including Stoke City, who beat Stevenage 4-0 thanks largely to a Peter Crouch hat-trick.

Crystal Palace won 2-0 against Blackpool, Chelsea saw off Bristol Rovers 3-2 and Liverpool thumped Burton Albion 5-0 in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

The blue half of Merseyside also won comfortably, with Everton beating Yeovil Town 4-0, while Championship Norwich City scored six goals in a 6-1 victory over Coventry City.

It was also goals galore at Ewood Park, where Blackburn Rovers avoided an upset by edging past Sky Bet League Two Crewe Alexandra 4-3 in extra-time, having fought back from 2-0 down.

In addition to the aforementioned Accrington triumph, three further games took place on Wednesday, with Fulham edging past Middlesbrough 2-1 in extra-time. Bournemouth and Sunderland avoided becoming Round Two casualties, seeing off Morecambe and Shrewsbury Town respectively.
