Preview: EFL Cup Round Two preview

22 August 2016

The EFL Cup action is back this week, and with some Premier League sides joining the fray, we’ll see 50 clubs take to the field in Round Two.

Teams from all four divisions will be competing for a place in the Round Three draw with 21 games taking place on Tuesday night and four on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, live on Sky Sports, Burton Albion host Liverpool for the first time in the club’s history. The newly- promoted Brewers will be looking to show that they can mix it with the best of them, aiming to cause an upset against the eight-time EFL Cup winners and ensure their place in the hat for round three.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, seven top-flight clubs face EFL opposition. Hull City have had a strong start to the season, they are away at Exeter City. Bristol Rovers have a trip to Stamford Bridge as they look to cause the upset of the round after seeing off Cardiff City in Round One.

At this point in the season last year, Rafa Benitez found himself in the dugout at the Bernabeu watching his Real Madrid side defeat Real Betis 5-0, but on Tuesday night he’ll be stepping out at St James’ Park to take on Gary Johnson’s Cheltenham Town, who this time last year were enjoying an away win at Torquay United in the National League.

On Wednesday, the action live on Sky Sports sees Accrington Stanley host last year’s Sky Bet Championship winners Burnley as the two Lancashire sides face off for the first time ever as The Clarets look to lift the Premier League pressure with a Cup win. At the same time, last season’s quarter-finalists Middlesbrough travel to Fulham with both sides possessing promising early- season form.

Morecambe are aiming to reach Round Three for the first time in eight years and they host Bournemouth. Sunderland, meanwhile, host Shrewsbury in the other Wednesday night fixture as David Moyes continues the search for his first win in charge of the Black Cats.
