Wigan Athletic chasing 20-match unbeaten streak

8 April 2016

Wigan Athletic will extend their unbeaten run to 20 games in Sky Bet League 1 if they can avoid defeat at home to Coventry City on Matchday 41.

Gary Caldwell's side are currently top of the division on 77 points with nearest challengers Burton Albion just a point behind, but prior to their excellent run it was a very different story.

The Latics, relegated from the Sky Bet Championship last season, won just one of their opening four league matches of the season but progressively accustomed to life in the third tier.

On 12th December, Wigan lost 1-0 at home to Blackpool which left them sixth in the league table, 10 points behind Burton who, at that stage, had a five-point advantage over Coventry at the summit.

Where the run began

Following their defeat to Blackpool, the Latics travelled to Barnsley and secured a 2-0 win at Oakwell.

Andy Kellett and Yanic Wildschut netted the goals for the visitors which saw them move above Peterborough United to fifth in the table.

The Northern Ireland international has netted 14 times in his last 15 games, including a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Port Vale on 30th January.

Only Nicky Ajose of Swindon Town has scored more goals than Grigg in the league this season.

Last time out

Wigan moved to the summit last weekend after a convincing 5-1 win over Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow.

Grigg was on target twice with Wildschut, Conor McAleny and Jason Pearce also getting on the scoresheet to ensure the club's unbeaten run reached 19 matches.

Records

Wigan currently hold the longest unbeaten run in The Football League, and they could break their own club record before the end of the season which stands at 25.

This run began on the last day of the 1998/99 season following a 3-1 win over Chesterfield and was brought to an end on 7th January 2000 when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Oldham Athletic.

Sky Bet League 2 leaders Northampton Town are currently 18 games without defeat and could clinch promotion to Sky Bet League 1 this weekend.

In the Sky Bet Championship, Brighton & Hove Albion began the season with a 17-game unbeaten streak, and are currently eight matches without defeat. Burnley have gone 12 matches without losing, drawing their last three.

The Football League record for the longest unbeaten run belongs to Huddersfield Town who went 43 games without losing from 1st January 2011 to 28th November 2011.
