While Pompey lost 3-1 at York City, the Gas drew 0-0 at Stevenage and Plymouth won 3-1 on the road at Leyton Orient.
That result for the Minstermen saw them stave off relegation for at least another few days.
Accrington Stanley moved up to second by beating Hartlepool United 2-1, and Oxford United are third after drawing 1-1 at Newport County.
Champions Northampton Town, meanwhile, moved on to 92 points by beating Crawley Town 2-1.
