Sky Bet League 2: Matchday 40 preview

1 April 2016

There's plenty to play for at both ends of Sky Bet League 2 on Matchday 40 with big games at the top and bottom of the table.

League leaders Northampton Town could clinch the first promotion of The Football League season this weekend, if they can defeat Notts County at Sixfields and other results go their way.

Here's a full list of the games taking place in Sky Bet League 2, all of which are 3pm kick-offs:

Saturday 2nd April 2016

Accrington Stanley v Cambridge United
Bristol Rovers v Crawley Town
Exeter City v Plymouth Argyle
Hartlepool United v Mansfield Town
Luton Town v Stevenage
Morecambe v Barnet
Northampton Town v Notts County
Portsmouth v Carlisle United
Wycombe Wanderers v AFC Wimbledon
Yeovil Town v Newport County
York City v Leyton Orient

The Cobblers' supporters will be keeping a close eye on events at Accrington and Bristol Rovers, who face Cambridge and Crawley respectively, to determine if they can seal their place in Sky Bet League 1.

Third-placed Plymouth are currently keeping Stanley and the Pirates out of the automatic promotion places, and they face a Devon derby at Exeter on Saturday.

Below that trio come a string of seven teams separated by just eight points, all of which have Play-Off aspirations as we enter the business end of the season.

Portsmouth head this chasing group and welcome Carlisle United to Fratton Park on Saturday, a team who are unbeaten in their last five and just six points behind Paul Cook's side.

The final Play-Off position is currently held by Wycombe Wanderers, with manager Gareth Ainsworth insisting his side can enjoy themselves after reaching their points target for the season with seven games to play.

However, they can't afford to relax too much as they host fellow Play-Off chasers AFC Wimbledon, and should they slip up then Leyton Orient can take their place in the top seven if they can overcome struggling York at Bootham Crescent.

The 23rd-placed Minstermen require the points themselves to keep up their hopes of avoiding relegation - they are seven points adrift of nearest rivals Stevenage, who travel to Luton Town.

Elsewhere, Hartlepool United, unbeaten in six, take on Mansfield Town; Morecambe play Barnet at the Globe Arena, and Yeovil Town lock horns with Newport County.
