Sky Bet League 1: Matchday 44 review

23 April 2016

Wigan Athletic all but guaranteed promotion with an impressive showing against Southend United.

Will Grigg bagged a brace in the 4-1 win over the Shrimpers, and the Latics can confirm their return to the Sky Bet Championship with one point from their two remaining fixtures.

A Lucas Akins hat-trick handed Burton Albion a 3-0 win away at 10-man Colchester United to remain three points behind, a result which confirmed relegation for the U's.

Walsall were thumped 4-0 by fifth-placed Bradford City — James Hanson hitting a treble — which severely dented the Saddlers' chance of automatic promotion, and Millwall took full advantage to move up to third with a 3-1 win at Bury.

Barnsley returned to the top six after battling out a goalless draw at Sheffield United in the day's early kick-off, overtaking Gillingham who later slipped to a 3-2 defeat at home to Shrewsbury Town.

Doncaster Rovers beat Coventry City 2-0 to boost their survival chances, with Fleetwood Town and Blackpool's goalless draw further tightening the situation towards the bottom of the table.

Elsewhere, Swindon Town and Oldham Athletic confirmed their safety with 1-0 wins at home to Chesterfield and Crewe Alexandra respectively.
