Sky Bet League 1: Matchday 42 review

16 April 2016

Doncaster Rovers kept their faint hopes of avoiding the Sky Bet League 1 drop alive after beating leaders Wigan Athletic 3-1 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The victory brought to an end a 17-game winless run for Rovers, while the result also ended Wigan’s 20-match unbeaten streak.

Darren Ferguson’s side were the only winners in the bottom nine, as Swindon Town, Chesterfield, Oldham Athletic, Fleetwood Town, Shrewsbury Town, Blackpool and Colchester United all failed to record three points.

Oldham and Fleetwood remain 18th and 19th respectively after a 1-1 draw at Highbury, and Shrewsbury secured a late point at Play-Off chasing Bradford City to remain above the relegation zone.

In the top half of the table, Jordy Hiwula’s 88th-minute header clinched Walsall a crucial 1-0 win at home to Southend United, while Coventry City came from a goal down to defeat Millwall 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena. Gillingham, a place below Millwall in sixth, lost for the second time in a week - this time away at Port Vale.

Elsewhere, second-placed Burton Albion drew 0-0 with Play-Off chasing Barnsley, and Rochdale, Sheffield United and Scunthorpe United kept their top-six ambitions intact with victories.
