Bradford City continued their good run with a 1-0 victory at home to Swindon, while Millwall came from behind to defeat Shrewsbury Town 3-1 at the Den.
Gillingham drew 0-0 at Sheffield United with Barnsley's top-six aspirations taking a slight dent after losing 2-1 to Chesterfield at Oakwell.
Towards the bottom, Colchester United extended their unbeaten run to four games to keep Blackpool in the relegation places, with Doncaster Rovers eight points from safety after a 1-0 defeat at Bury.
Crewe Alexandra's relegation to Sky Bet League 2 was confirmed after losing 3-0 against Port Vale.

Elsewhere, Peterborough United lost 2-1 at home to Rochdale and Southend United drew 2-2 with Fleetwood Town.
