Sky Bet League 1: Matchday 40 preview

1 April 2016

There are 11 games taking place in Sky Bet League 1 on Matchday 40 with leaders Burton Albion looking to strengthen their grip on automatic promotion.

Nigel Clough's men are seven points clear of Walsall in third, having played two games more, but a win over Bury will bring the Brewers closer to a place in the Sky Bet Championship.

Nearest challengers, second-placed Wigan Athletic, are now unbeaten in 18 and travel to Shrewsbury Town knowing that a win could put them top if Burton fail to achieve maximum points.

Here's a full list of fixtures taking place in Sky Bet League 1 on Matchday 40. All are 3pm kick-offs:

Saturday 2nd April 2016

Blackpool v Southend United
Bradford City v Scunthorpe United
Burton Albion v Bury
Chesterfield v Port Vale
Colchester United v Millwall
Gillingham v Coventry City
Peterborough United v Crewe Alexandra
Rochdale v Doncaster Rovers
Sheffield United v Walsall
Shrewsbury Town v Wigan Athletic
Swindon Town v Fleetwood Town

Behind the top two, Walsall, who haven't lost on the road in the league since November, travel to Sheffield United who are in need of three points to keep their Play-Off hopes alive.

Gillingham could all but end Coventry City's top-six ambitions with a win at Priestfield. Justin Edinburgh's men are unbeaten in four and have lost just twice at home all season.

Millwall travel to Colchester United, who haven't given up hope on avoiding the drop following back-to-back wins over Doncaster Rovers and Coventry, while sixth-placed Bradford City welcome Scunthorpe United to Valley Parade.

Below the Bantams are a clutch of sides looking to seal a Play-Off place come early May.

Southend United gave their chances a boost with a win over Sheffield United during the week, and on Saturday they travel to Blackpool who are just one point above the relegation zone.

Darren Ferguson's Doncaster Rovers have lost seven consecutive games and they travel to Spotland on Matchday 40 to play a Rochdale team who are also well placed to mount a late charge for the Play-Offs; currently seven points adrift.

Elsewhere, Fleetwood Town, outside the bottom four on goal difference, take on Swindon Town at the County Ground, while Chesterfield lock horns with Port Vale.

Bottom-of-the-league Crewe Alexandra - 11 points off safety - travel to mid-table Peterborough United.
