Milan Lalkovic and Jordi Hiwula found the net in the space of ten minutes to take a commanding lead, with an impressive strike from Luke Norris coming too late in the day for the hosts.
Barnsley are now just three points behind Justin Edinburgh's men who are now sixth, while Walsall move up to third.
Luton Town beat Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 in Sky Bet League 2 while Jon Stead's second half goal was enough to see Notts County defeat Hartlepool United 1-0.
