Sky Bet Football League: Midweek preview

26 April 2016

There are three games taking place this evening across the Football League, where Wigan Athletic could be promoted to the Sky Bet Championship without kicking a ball.

Sky Bet League 1

Walsall play Shrewsbury Town at Banks's Stadium in a match which could have a major impact at both ends of the division.

If the Saddlers fail to win tonight's game in hand, then it would severely damage their automatic promotion chances. They trail second-placed Burton Albion by six points, and will have just two games left to play after tonight.

Furthermore, if Walsall do drop points, then Wigan's promotion to the Championship will be confirmed. It is almost impossible for the Latics to drop out of the top two due to their far superior goal difference but, mathematically speaking, they can still be caught.

As for the Shrews, Micky Mellon's men are currently four points clear of the relegation zone, and three points tonight will secure their League 1 survival.

Sky Bet Championship

In the Sky Bet Championship, Hull City host Brentford at the KC Stadium. Steve Bruce's side can no longer achieve automatic promotion, but a Play-Off place is guaranteed.

Brentford, unbeaten in six, have climbed to 10th in the table and will move above Birmingham City if they can claim victory.

Sky Bet League 2

Two of the top seven clash as AFC Wimbledon, who have won their last five matches, take on Portsmouth.

Both teams look set for a place in the Play-Offs, however one of these teams could guarantee that spot tonight. AFC Wimbledon have to win to do so, while Pompey just need to avoid defeat.
