Sky Bet Championship: Matchday 42 review

16 April 2016

Middlesbrough recorded a dramatic late win at Bolton Wanderers to remain top of the Sky Bet Championship.

Josh Vela had given the Trotters the lead with half an hour to play, but Boro responded through two goals from Jordan Rhodes to seal a crucial three points.

With that victory, the pressure was handed down to Burnley, who had to win to return to the automatic promotion places after Brighton & Hove Albion beat Fulham 5-0 on Friday night.

And the Clarets duly did - beating Birmingham City 2-1 after goals from George Boyd and Andre Gray.

Derby County took a huge stride towards booking their Play-Off place, after Johnny Russell’s second-half strike saw the Rams triumph at Charlton Athletic. The 1-0 result leaves the Addicks on the verge of relegation to Sky Bet League 1.

Sheffield Wednesday maintained their five-point cushion in the last of the Play-Off places, after they drew 1-1 at home with Ipswich Town. Cardiff City, in seventh place, also managed just a point against Queens Park Rangers in South Wales.

Elsewhere, Leeds United beat Reading 3-2 in a topsy-turvy encounter at Elland Road, Huddersfield Town defeated Blackburn Rovers 2-0, and Milton Keynes Dons drew 1-1 at Preston North End after striker Alex Revell was forced to wear his side’s goalkeeping gloves. The 32-year-old saved a penalty late in the game from Joe Garner.
