Shared spoils see Middlesbrough return to Sky Bet Championship summit

29 April 2016

Middlesbrough moved back to the top of the Sky Bet Championship after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Birmingham City.

The Friday night showing on Sky Sports got off to a slow start, but it suddenly burst into life with Jordan Rhodes twice denied by Birmingham goalkeeper Adam Legzdins, before the hosts broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark.

Blues midfielder Stephen Gleeson’s superb strike handed them the lead, but it was third time lucky for Rhodes who pounced after an error from Legzdins to level matters before half-time.

The Scottish international turned provider after the break, heading Albert Adomah’s cross into the path of Gaston Ramirez, who nodded the visitors in front for the first time.

But then it was Birmingham who fought back, and it was another fantastic effort - this time from David Davis - to make it 2-2.

A frantic end to the match saw Dani Ayala have an effort ruled out and Grant Leadbitter strike the crossbar from long range, while further chances went begging at either end.

The point sees Middlesbrough top the pile until Bank Holiday Monday at least, when promotion rivals Brighton & Hove Albion and Burnley return to action.
