Race for the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs: Sheffield Wednesday v Cardiff City

28 April 2016

Sheffield Wednesday host Cardiff City at Hillsborough on Saturday, with both clubs still in the frame to finish the campaign in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off positions.

Wednesday are best placed to make the end-of-season showdowns, and hold a four-point advantage in the table over Cardiff with two games to play.

The Owls are sixth on 71 points – seven behind Derby County, who have already guaranteed a top-six finish – and the Bluebirds are seventh with 67 points, meaning anything less than a win for the visitors this weekend will see Wednesday into the Play-Offs for the first time since 2005, when they won promotion to the Championship.

However, should Cardiff come away with victory, it'll set up an exciting climax on the last day of the season. That result would still see them needing to beat Birmingham City in South Wales a week later to realistically keep their hopes alive, but would leave them in with a chance on what always proves to be a drama-filled final afternoon.

If Russell Slade's men do make it in, it'll be the first time since 2012 that the club have done so, in what was the last of three consecutive Play-Off finishes.

The permutations

If Sheffield Wednesday win or draw against Cardiff this weekend, they are guaranteed a Play-Off place.

If Cardiff win on Saturday, they will close the gap to a single point going into the final weekend of the regular season.

The state of play: The possible ups and downs in the Sky Bet Football League

If the Bluebirds do take it to the last day, they will need to better Wednesday's result at Wolverhampton Wanderers. A loss for Wednesday and a win for Cardiff would see the Bluebirds clinch the last Play-Off spot, as could a City draw in the same scenario – although they'd have to make up a sizeable goal difference in order to finish above them.

Should Wednesday win on the final day, regardless of this weekend's result, they will secure sixth.
