Northampton Town promoted to Sky Bet League 1

9 April 2016

Northampton Town have confirmed their place in Sky Bet League 1 after the weekend's 2-2 draw with Bristol Rovers at Sixfields Stadium.

The Cobblers knew three points would guarantee promotion, but as it turned out a point proved enough with results elsewhere going their way.

Chris Wilder's men are 16 points clear of Rovers, currently in fourth place, with five games left to play.

They return to Sky Bet League 1 after a seven-season absence.

"It's a terrific day, seasons like this don't come around that often and we need to enjoy this time," manager Chris Wilder said.

“The character of the players has been first class all season and they deserve this.

“The survival of the football club was the biggest result we had this season but this goes alongside it.

“The club has got a bright future ahead and hopefully we can move on again from this."
