Final Third Development League Digest

28 April 2016

Two league champions crowned, and cup success for Southend United – it was an exciting week of Final Third Development League action.

Here's a round-up of all the Final Third Development League matches played since 21st April.

Final Third Development League – South

AFC Bournemouth were crowned champions of the South Division on Monday when second-placed AFC Wimbledon lost 1-0 to Gillingham.

The Dons were the only team who could catch the Cherries, who are on 23 points, but that result left them five points adrift with one game to play.

The Gills were back in action on Thursday when they were defeated 3-1 at Leyton Orient.

Final Third Development League – West

Bradford City were crowned champions of the West Division after their 6-0 thrashing of Walsall on Wednesday.

The Bantams needed just a point to win the league, but they made sure by hitting the second-placed Saddlers for six, with Reece Webb-Foster hitting four.

Elsewhere in the West, Port Vale were 3-0 victors at Morecambe on Tuesday.

Final Third Development League – East

A busy week in the East Division saw the top two pick up three points apiece, meaning the title race will go down to the final round of matches.

Chesterfield are top of the pile following a dramatic 3-2 win at Doncaster Rovers, which was their last game of the season. The Spireites trailed 2-1 going into injury time but scored two quick-fire goals to take the points.

Notts County trail the Spireites by a point as they beat Gateshead 2-0, and the Magpies have one game remaining. A win or a draw would see County crowned champions, given their far superior goal difference.

Gateshead were also in action on Monday when they won 2-1 at Grimsby Town, while the latter shared the points with Rotherham United in a 1-1 draw in their second game of the week.

Also in the East, Luton Town ran out 1-0 winners in Bedford against Cambridge United on Tuesday.

Final Third Development League Cup – South

Southend United lifted the Final Third Development League South Cup thanks to a 2-1 win at Swindon Town on Tuesday.

Jamar Loza was the two-goal hero for the Blues, while Jermaine Hylton grabbed a late consolation for the Robins.
