Bolton Wanderers relegated to Sky Bet League 1

9 April 2016

Bolton Wanderers will be playing Sky Bet League 1 football next season after their 4-1 defeat to Derby County on Saturday afternoon.

The Trotters knew they had to win to avoid relegation but, after losing at the iPro Stadium, their status was confirmed.

After that defeat, Bolton are now 20 points from safety with only 15 available from their remaining five league games. They have won just four games all season, the most recent of those coming on 6th February against Rotherham United.

The club have not played in the third tier of English football since 1992/93, and interim boss Jimmy Phillips said: "It has been a really sad year.

"The only positive thing we can say about this season is that we still have a football club called Bolton Wanderers, because at one stage that was seriously doubtful.

"A club that means so much to me, it’s sad to see us where we are right now, but we have to believe that we will come back."
