Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat says his side have nothing to lose when they host Manchester City in Round 3 of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night. The Black Cats will meet City in a repeat of the 2014 Final at the Stadium of Light, with the two clubs having experienced contrasting fortunes in the Premier League this season.
Sunderland are winless and prop up the top flight, while Manuel Pellegrini's side are at the summit with just one loss from their first six - but Advocaat believes a positive result is due for his team.
“We have nothing to lose, in my opinion, against a top European club,” he told safc.com.
“We can see in the figures the improvement of the players physically and we’re coming to a level where there are no excuses anymore.
"It's moving in the right direction but, if you get new players in the physical condition they came to us, it takes time. We have the quality to come through, I have no doubts about that, it is just a matter of when.
“Manchester City are a very good side but we have to show something after Saturday’s game. We will play a little differently in the line-up so I have to take a look at some players and how they do in a different position – a normal position for me but different to what I did before. I still have a good feeling about this squad.”
