Southend United v Shrewsbury Town: The Sky Bet League 1 new boys

11 September 2015

Southend United meet Shrewsbury Town this weekend just months after the pair achieved promotion to Sky Bet League 1.

The visiting Shrews booked their place in the third tier on the penultimate week of the 2014/15 season, eventually finished second in Sky Bet League 2 behind Burton Albion.

Southend also came up, but did it the hard way after dropping out of the automatic places on the final day, sealing their spot in League 1 via the Play-Offs.

The pair have found life in their new division tough so far, but both go in to this fixture with cause for optimism after picking up their first League wins last weekend.

With the Sky Sports cameras at Roots Hall, the Shrimpers recorded all three points with an impressive display against Peterborough United, with left-back Ben Coker earning a place in The Football League Team of the Week for his display.

Joining Coker in that line-up was Jordan Clark, who grabbed a last-minute goal as Shrewsbury also earned maximum points with a win at Barnsley.

The Shrews had just two points from their first five outings, but it was a successful return to Oakwell for Clark and manager Micky Mellon, who both had previous spells with the Tykes.

Southend picked up a narrow 1-0 win when these two sides crossed paths on the east coast last term, and their latest clash presents an opportunity to kick-on from last week's triumphs.
