Sky Bet Championship: Matchday 7 review

16 September 2015

Brighton & Hove Albion opened up a five-point gap at the top of the Sky Bet Championship after a 2-1 win over Rotherham United.

Top scorer Tomer Hemed netted for the third time in as many outings to set the Seagulls on their way, and Dale Stephens added a second with a fine finish from outside the penalty area.

Jonson Clarke-Harris did pull one back for winless Rotherham with 20 minutes of normal time left to play, but the Millers' fifth defeat of the campaign keeps them rooted to the bottom of the table.

Brighton are now the only undefeated team in the division after Cardiff City, Birmingham City and Leeds United all lost for the first time.

Cardiff fell 2-0 at home to Hull City after goals from Mohamed Diame and Abel Hernandez in the Welsh capital, while Birmingham were victims of a second straight Nottingham Forest win, as Dexter Blackstock netted the only goal in a 1-0 scoreline.

Tommy Smith's first-half header ended Leeds' run, as Ipswich Town responded in style to a heavy defeat by Reading last week. The Royals, on the other hand, could not replicate their free-scoring form on Matchday 7, with Tom Ince on target in a 1-0 triumph for the travelling Derby County, who now have back-to-back victories to their name.

Burnley recorded their fourth three-point haul in succession to defeat Milton Keynes Dons 2-1 at Turf Moor, and Huddersfield Town won for the first time this term with an impressive 2-1 success at Charlton Athletic.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough fended off a spirited Brentford side to claim a 3-1 victory at the Riverside, with Christian Stuani netting twice to take his total for the season to seven goals.

There was one Sky Bet Championship game being contested on Wednesday evening, as Queens Park Rangers and Blackburn Rovers played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Loftus Road. Rovers went in front twice through Shane Duffy and Jordan Rhodes, but failed to hold on for their first win of the season after Charlie Austin and Nedum Onuoha netted for the home side.
