A football-mad couple, divided by their sporting passions, have had a unique boost to celebrate their differences.Husband and wife, John Goodfellow and Yasmin Romane, usually live in harmony – unless their respective teams clash – for the Birmingham-based duo support opposing local teams. John is an avid Aston Villa fan, whilst Yasmin is passionate about Birmingham City.
The two, who wed in 2012, have been unable to agree how to celebrate their differences at home, until cup sponsor Capital One heard of their plight and stepped in to give them a home makeover ahead of Tuesday’s derby clash between the teams.
Yasmin said: “The only thing we don’t see eye-to-eye on is our football team. Aside from being the biggest football match for both clubs, the derby carries a lot of significance for us both as a couple. Thanks to Capital One we’ll all feel at home whilst watching the game.”
The couple met following a derby eight years ago. Despite an Aston Villa victory, love blossomed and they put their football differences aside.
Tuesday’s Second City derby is the first for Yasmin and John as husband and wife, and as parents. The game also brings a new dilemma as the couple have not yet decided which team to encourage their twin baby girls, Sophia and Sienna, to support.
Capital One has given both partners home advantage when the family sit down to watch the big game on TV. Their house has been kitted out in Villa’s claret-and-blue and Birmingham’s blue-and-white, including the addition of a half-and-half duvet cover. Both children have been given both teams’ strips, allowing the couple to make the final decision on where their loyalties should lie.
Jason Carr, head of sponsorship at Capital One, said: “Round 3 of the Capital One Cup has thrown up some great fixtures. As the sponsor, we understand that derby games can often result in families, friends and partners being divided by the colour shirt they choose to wear. Yasmin and John are no exception which is why we want to show both sides our support, especially on the day of their daughters’ first derby game.”
