Celebrating 63 years of Queen Elizabeth II

9 September 2015

Today sees Queen Elizabeth II become Britain's longest-serving reigning monarch, marking 63 years and seven months on the throne.

Her Majesty began her time in charge on 6th February 1952, a remarkable 23,226 days ago. So what was going on in The Football League at the time?

Well, the 1951/52 campaign was in full flow, and it was Manchester United who sat top of the First Division when the Queen was handed the crown.

Cardiff City were clear in the Second Division in February, and the Third Division was split into North and South regions back then.

Lincoln City, currently plying their trade in the Conference, were leading the pack towards the top half of the country, and Plymouth Argyle were top of the South.

Three of those held on to win their respective divisions with Cardiff City the exception, after being pipped to the post by Sheffield Wednesday, while Newcastle United were FA Cup winners that year.

It's worth pointing out the achievements of Paul Tisdale, who sits top of the pile in terms of current longest-serving managers in The Football League.

The Exeter City boss has been in charge at St James Park for just over nine years, so he still has some way to go if he is to match Her Majesty's efforts!

And just the one current Football League manager was around when the Queen took to the throne, with that honour going to Luton Town boss John Still, who was approaching his second birthday at the time. Sorry, John!
