Carlisle United must take Capital One Cup confidence into Sky Bet League 2 - Alexander McQueen

25 September 2015

Alexander McQueen says he and his Carlisle United team-mates must take the momentum from their Capital One Cup run into Sky Bet League 2.

The Cumbrians face Newport County this weekend in The Football League, just days after taking Liverpool to penalties in Round 3 of the Cup, where they eventually succumbed to a 3-2 defeat on spot-kicks.

“It’s been a good run for everybody,” the wing-back, who found the net with an excellent penalty in the shoot-out, told the club's official website.

“We did well to get here [to Round 3] by beating Chesterfield and QPR and it’s allowed us to show how good we are.

“We have to carry that on in another big game against Newport at the weekend.”

Keith Curle's men currently sit 10th in Sky Bet League 2 having won three, drawn four and lost only once so far.

That defeat came in mid-August, meaning United are unbeaten in five League outings, with three of those being victories.

And the manager has also stated that their Anfield heroics must be used as a platform to push on in the league, starting with Newport County, who are the only Football League team yet to record maximum points.

“It’s important that we follow up what we’ve done [at Anfield] with three points at the weekend,” the manager said.

“Yes, we’ve come to Anfield and taken one of the best clubs in the country to penalties, and that’s something we have to embrace. We also have to use it as another building block.

“We have to refocus on what is an important game against Newport and we also have some players who didn’t make the 18, because of the way we wanted to approach Liverpool.

“This game [against Liverpool] has gone now so we embrace the performance and immediately look to how we get ourselves together for the next one.”
