Southend United manager Phil Brown believes the 1-0 win against Port Vale is the best result since he joined the club.
Brown took over at Roots Hall in March 2013 and has enjoyed much success, including last season’s Sky Bet League 2 Play-Off Final triumph over Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley. But he singled out the narrow victory over the Valiants as a highlight - that being their fifth win in their last seven outings and a result that lifted them to within two points of the Sky Bet League 1 Play-Off places.
“It was a tough and committed game and the best clean sheet and result since I’ve been here,” Brown reflected to southendunited.co.uk. “Even more so than Wembley and games like that.
“The performance and result shows that we belong here. The crown jewels were out on show.
“It could have gone either way in the first half but we played some great football to get in the final third.
“It was a hard game to manage whether you were a manager, player or referee and it was one of the best refereeing performances I’ve seen in a long time.”
