Chesterfield manager Dean Saunders heaped praise on his Chesterfield players following their 2-1 win at Crewe Alexandra in Sky Bet League 1.
The Spireites had thrown away leads in three of their September fixtures in a month which saw them pick up just one point, and it looked like that could be the case again after Crewe's David Fox cancelled out Dan Gardner's strike. However, Gardner popped up again to grab the winner, and Saunders was pleased with the reaction of his team.
"I thought the lads were brilliant considering we've lost a couple of leads - but we've hung on which will give them belief going into the future," Saunders told Chesterfield's official website.
"We're three points off the top six now. It's a tight league so we'll just have to keep on picking up points while I'm piecing together what we need to do to be a bit more resilient."
And the Welshman revealed he nearly took off the match-winner before his second goal, adding: "He's in there where it matters and that's what I've asked from him.
"The two wide players need to score more goals and that's three he's got now. He looked tired actually and I was just about to bring him off, fortunately I didn't!"
