After defeat at the weekend, Plymouth Argyle are now defending their status as Sky Bet League 2 leaders, with Oxford United waiting in the wings.
The Pilgrims suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Exeter City in the Devon Derby on Saturday, after Ryan Harley netted twice for the Grecians to end their hopes of a fourth successive win. On Tuesday, they're at Home Park again - with Leyton Orient the visitors this time around. The O's, after back-to-back defeats, returned to winning ways on Matchday 18, defeating York City 3-2 at Brisbane Road, and another win on the south coast could put the hosts' lead of the standings in jeopardy.
The challengers
That is because Oxford United are now primed and ready to pounce, after they took advantage of Plymouth's defeat with a 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge.
It was a third triumph on the bounce for the U's, and they're now within two points of reaching the summit for the first time this season.
Anything but a win for Plymouth against Orient, and that could be the case. Oxford are currently matching the leaders' goal difference tally of 14, so a win for Michael Appleton's men at their expense would send them top.
Their bid to achieve that sees them at home to another side battling at the other end of the Sky Bet League 2 table - Newport County. The Welsh side's recent form under new manager John Sheridan has been good, however, and they've not been beaten in any of their previous five outings.
