Sky Bet League 1's top-two tussle: Coventry City v Gillingham

20 November 2015

This Saturday, at 3pm, Coventry City and Gillingham will go head-to-head in a battle for top spot in Sky Bet League 1.

It's a fitting fixture to mark the 50th meeting between the sides, and the game promises to be an entertaining affair...

The state of play

Both clubs have 34 points, but Gillingham's goal difference of 15 is one better than that of Coventry's, meaning it's the Kent club who go into the weekend on top.

The pair took advantage during the international break, with fellow title-chasers Walsall and Burton Albion out of action. Dependent on results, we could see all four sides finish the weekend tied on 35 points.

Goals

These two clubs certainly know where the back of the net is. The Gills have hit 34 so far at an average of two per game, a figure only matched by Peterborough United.

And just two behind are Coventry, who boast the division's most prolific goalscorer in Adam Armstrong. The teenager, on loan from Newcastle United, has been in sparking form, finding the net 12 times so far this term.

Form

Coventry have the slight edge when it comes to current form, having gone unbeaten in eight league outings and taking maximum points from their last three.

Meanwhile, Justin Edinburgh's men have lost just one of their past eight. That defeat, however, came against Walsall in a match that was also a top-two battle at the time.

History

Another stat in Coventry's favour is their 24 wins to Gillingham's 15, while 10 draws have occurred since the first meeting in 1926.

The home side in this fixture have been victorious in the last five encounters, and the Gills are looking for a first win at Coventry since 2002 - when they triumphed 2-1 at Highfield Road.

They suffered a 1-0 reverse in their first ever visit to the Ricoh Arena last season, however the return fixture saw Gillingham produce a remarkable late show to pick up a 3-1 win at the Priestfield.
