Southend United’s Michael Timlin targeting Wembley glory

22 May 2015

Southend United midfielder Michael Timlin says he has only envisaged being a winner at Wembley Stadium this weekend when his side contest the Sky Bet League 2 Play-Off Final.

The Shrimpers meet Wycombe Wanderers at the national stadium on Saturday, having gone one further than their Play-Off semi-final defeat of last term.

Timlin admits it’s a dream to be turning out under the Wembley arch for Southend, and he is desperate to leave the venue victorious.

“There's a lot riding on it not just for the players and staff, but for the supporters and the club as a whole,” he told Southend’s official website.

“It's a great achievement to go one better than last year. There's no point getting to Wembley and not achieving the ultimate goal. Playing at Wembley is every boy's dream and we're looking forward to it. Either team can win and it'll be a great game.

“We're all confident going into the game and we want to put on a good show for the supporters.”

Timlin has praised opposition manager Gareth Ainsworth, after he guided Wycombe to the Final just a year after the Chairboys narrowly avoided relegation from The Football League.

The 30-year-old also credits Southend’s unbeaten runs throughout the season - where they peaked to 10 games without defeat – and believes momentum is on the Blues’ side going into the game.

“Gareth Ainsworth and his team have done amazing to get in the Play-Off Final after last season,” he added.

“They're a hardworking team and we know about them, and they know about us as well.

“The unbeaten run we had gave us an opportunity to get in the position for automatic promotion. We have proved to everyone how confident we are. We have momentum.

“However, Wembley is just one game, and we need to focus on the job in hand and listen to the manager.”
