Preston North End and Swindon Town meet at Wembley for a place in the Sky Bet Championship, but who has the upper hand in the historical head-to-head record?
The two teams have met 32 times since their first encounter in 1935, and Preston hold the advantage ahead of Sunday’s Play-Off Final having claimed 15 wins to Swindon’s nine, alongside eight draws.Their two matches this season suggest that the current gap between the pair is much closer, though, despite the 10-point gap that separated them in the final League 1 standings.
Their first meeting came in November at the County Ground and it was the Robins who prevailed after Andy Williams scored the only goal of the game with 84 minutes on the clock. The three points saw Mark Cooper’s side, who were third at the time, close the gap on second-placed North End.
The Lilywhites still sat second when they hosted Swindon for the reverse fixture in late April. Joe Garner hit a hat-trick that day as Simon Grayson’s men moved within one victory of automatic promotion, but they failed to get over the line as their last-day defeat at Colchester United was coupled with a victory for MK Dons, who moved up to the second-tier.
Now both sides are one win away from the Sky Bet Championship, and their head-to-head record points to an open affair at Wembley.
