Preston North End's John Welsh: “It's definitely the biggest game in my career”

22 May 2015

John Welsh has played in some of the world's most illustrious competitions but he insists the Sky Bet League 1 Play-Off Final will be the biggest game of his career.

The midfielder featured in Liverpool's run to the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final success, coming on as a substitute in the round of 16 tie at Bayer Leverkusen, and also played against Arsenal in the Premier League during his time at Anfield.

Since then, Welsh has played for Hull City and Tranmere Rovers, alongside a handful of loan spells elsewhere, prior to his May 2012 switch to Preston North End.

He has gone on to make more than 100 appearances for the Lilywhites, including 43 this season, and is relishing this Sunday's Sky Bet League 1 Play-off Final at Wembley against Swindon Town.

“I think probably for myself, it's one of the biggest games of my career,” the 31-year-old told Preston's official website.

“Obviously I've been at Hull when we got promoted and I've been at Liverpool winning the Champions League but for me this is the first final where I can win something where I've been involved a lot in.
"It's definitely the biggest game in my career, and it probably will be for some of the other lads. I think the good thing about our squad, and obviously with the gaffer is they have been there and they have won or they've been at Wembley and they know what it's all about and they know what they need to do to win there.

"It's going to be a great occasion, I'm sure the lads are really looking forward to it but it's a game of football and that's what we have got to treat it like.
"I'm sure once you get there the blood will be pumping and the adrenaline will be going so I think you can use that in a positive way, I certainly will.
"Obviously we will enjoy it at first, walking out onto the pitch and seeing the fans - you always enjoy that - but I think once the whistle goes you're back to business and you know what you've got to do to win the game and you just plan on doing that."
