Preston North End and Swindon Town will take leads into their respective second legs after the first action of the 2014/15 Sky Bet Football League Play-Offs.Jermaine Beckford scored the only goal of the game in the sixth minute for the Lilywhites at Chesterfield, after collecting a through-ball from Chris Humphrey.
The Spireites had chances to level, registering 20 shots, but North End, who have failed to win promotion in their previous nine Play-Off campaigns, held on to take a slender lead back to Deepdale for Sunday’s second leg.
At Bramall Lane, Nathan Byrne netted in second-half injury time to earn Swindon Town a 2-1 win and their first victory at Sheffield United since 1970.
The Robins fell behind in the first half when Kieron Freeman scored for the hosts, and they squandered the chance to level from the penalty spot when Mark Howard denied Ben Gladwin.
But Sam Ricketts rose highest to head Mark Cooper's men level just after the break before Byrne stole a 2-1 win at the death, giving them a slender lead going into next Monday’s second leg at the County Ground.
