Middlesbrough grind out Sky Bet Championship Play-Off semi-final first leg win at Brentford

8 May 2015

Middlesbrough will take Brentford back to the Riverside Stadium next Friday with a narrow 2-1 advantage from their Sky Bet Championship Play-Off semi-final first leg.

Aitor Karanka’s men left it late to steal a victory in a thrilling encounter at Griffin Park, as Fernando Amorebieta struck the winner deep into stoppage time.

Jelle Vossen had given Boro a first-half lead after he latched onto an Adam Clayton cross to neatly head past goalkeeper David Button.

Andre Gray blazed a close-range effort over the crossbar early in the second period, but the 23-year-old was on hand to level the scores moments later as Middlesbrough goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos failed to clear his lines, allowing Gray to roll into an empty net.

The pulsating, end-to-end game looked set to finish all square, but Amorebieta’s effort ensured Boro left West London victorious.
