Sky Bet Football League Team of the Week

30 March 2015

We pick out 11 top performers and a manager from the week's Sky Bet Football League matches.

Goalkeeper: Jamie Jones (Rochdale)

Rochdale moved into the Sky Bet League 1 Play-Off places thanks to a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town at Spotland. Dale would have gone behind had it not been for  the on-loan Jones, who stopped James Hayter’s first-half penalty, spurring the hosts to go on and take all three points.

Defender: Sam Hird (Chesterfield)

Chesterfield remain firmly in the Sky Bet League 1 Play-Off hunt thanks to a 1-0 triumph over Walsall. Hird put in a solid performance at the back, before popping up to head home a late winner for the Spireites - his second goal in his past six games.

Defender: Aaron Pierre (Wycombe Wanderers)

Pierre played his part in two away victories for Wycombe this past week. A midweek success at Luton Town was followed by a 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday, with Pierre putting in a commanding defensive display as well as scoring the deciding goal.

Defender: Ismail Yakubu (Newport County)

Yakubu produced a strong display on Friday night, when the Exiles won at Accrington Stanley. Newport kept their opponents at bay throughout, and the defender stormed forward from the back to tee up Shaun Jeffers for the second goal in a 2-0 triumph.

Midfielder: Bradley Dack (Gillingham)

Dack was instrumental for Gillingham as they won at Crawley Town on Saturday afternoon. The midfielder netted the opener, and turned provider when he assisted Jermaine McGlashan for the match-winner.

Midfielder: Dean Cox (Leyton Orient)

Orient picked up an important weekend win in their quest for League 1 survival, with Cox instrumental in the 3-1 triumph over Port Vale. Cox pulled the strings in midfield, before rounding off the success with a 25-yard rocket.

Midfielder: Ricky Holmes (Northampton Town)

Northampton Town came from behind to inflict a sixth successive defeat on Luton Town, with Ricky Holmes starring at Sixfields. The winger took the game to the Hatters and equalised from the spot, before his deflected strike led to the Cobblers’ winner, to maintain their Play-Off push.

Midfielder: Bobby Grant (Shrewsbury Town)

Grant shone from midfield for Shrewsbury as they closed the gap to two points at the top of Sky Bet League 2 courtesy of a win at Portsmouth. The on-loan from Blackpool man found the net twice for the Shrews, expertly finishing from outside the box with his left foot on both occasions.

Striker: Billy Clarke (Bradford City)

Bradford recorded a 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic to sit just two points off the Sky Bet League 1 top six with a game in-hand. Clarke was the man that did the damage for the Bantams, bagging himself a second-half brace.

Striker: Shaquille Coulthirst (York City)

Coulthirst was the pick of a fine York performance at the weekend, in which they took all three points despite playing an hour at Mansfield Town with 10 men. The Tottenham Hotspur loanee had already scored by the time Bobby Olejnik received a first-half red card, but the Minstermen didn’t let up, and the 21-year old struck again late on to seal a 4-1 success.

Striker: Reuben Reid (Plymouth Argyle)

Reid moved within one goal of Portsmouth’s Matt Tubbs at the top of the Sky Bet League 2 scoring charts, helping himself to his 16th and 17th league goals in a 3-0 triumph at struggling Cheltenham Town. The striker put the Pilgrims ahead after great work from Carl McHugh, before doubling the advantage on the hour.

Manager: Ronnie Moore (Hartlepool United)

Hartlepool United moved off of the bottom and out of the Sky Bet League 2 relegation zone thanks to a 2-1 victory over Cambridge United. Pools have been rooted to the bottom of The Football League for five months, but under Moore’s guidance they have sealed four straight wins and are now up to 22nd in the table.
