Shrewsbury Town's Micky Mellon relishing Blackburn Rovers test

16 June 2015

Micky Mellon believes the Capital One Cup Round 1 presents his Shrewsbury Town side with a fantastic opportunity, as they head to Blackburn Rovers.

Mellon's men were promotion winners in Sky Bet League 2 last term, and are now preparing themselves for League 1 football in 2015/16.

But they were also successful in the Cup during 2014/15, beating higher division sides in Blackpool, Leicester City and Norwich City before being knocked out by eventual winners Chelsea, losing 2-1.

Mellon feels Blackburn will provide a good test for his side and, as a former Burnley player, he is well-versed with Rovers.

"It will be a fantastic opportunity for us to go and measure ourselves against a fantastic Blackburn side," he said on the Shrews' official website.

"Regardless of the time of the season, it’s a great place to go and a chance to see how we do against a top Championship team.

"I would have preferred a home draw for the advantage of being on our own pitch, but it’s an opportunity for the players to perform on a fantastic stage and that’s what football is all about.

"I’ve had plenty of games against them [Blackburn] in my career, especially derbies for Burnley, so I know what they’re about.

"Their fans are very passionate and they expect Blackburn to win every game they play so the challenge is there for us.

"We won’t be fancied going up there but it doesn’t hold any fear for us. Blackburn will be the favourites but we want to go there and give a good account of ourselves and see where it takes us."
