Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon is delighted with the strength of his squad, after completing the signing of Crewe Alexandra captain Matt Tootle.Tootle, who has penned a two-year deal, made over 200 appearances during his time at the Alexandra Stadium and Mellon feels that his know-how will be key upon the Shrews' return to Sky Bet League 1.
“I’m really pleased to finally get this over the line and Matt is a player that we have been very aware of,” Mellon told the club’s official site.
“He’s the type of player we wanted to bring to the club with that age and experience of over 200 league games under his belt.
“With that ability he is the type of player we feel we need to improve us as we go into a very season.”
Defender Tootle becomes Shrewsbury’s sixth addition of what has already been a busy summer for the Shropshire-based outfit.
Mellon does not feel his work is done yet, though, and intends to go back into the market in the near future, as he plots to strengthen his side even further.
”That is another box that was ticked and people see what we have tried to do is recruit players that we know can operate in League 1 or who are going to get good enough and give a good account of themselves very quickly,” the manager added.
“If people look at [Mat] Sadler, [Martin] Woods, [Abu] Agogo, [Shaun] Whalley and now Tootle then they will be able to see what we are trying to do.
“There are bits and bats of the squad we want to try and do and to try and improve.
“We’ve worked alongside the chairman and Matt, who have been great to us, to shape a squad that we believe will be good enough to give a good account of ourselves in a tough division.”
