Steve McClaren wants Ivan Calero to get Football League experience

23 January 2015

Derby County midfielder Ivan Calero has been training with Burton Albion, with boss Steve McClaren wanting him to experience The Football League.

The Spanish teenager has spent the week with the Rams' Sky Bet League 2 neighbours, managed by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who coached under McClaren at Nottingham Forest, and may make a loan switch to the Pirelli Stadium.

"We're giving him a change of environment," said Derby head coach McClaren.

"He knows Jimmy Floyd very well, as I do, and we just said it might be interesting to go down for a day or two and train, and see if he can develop from that.

"Our Under-21 team is doing very well and there comes a stage when the players need to be blooded in The Football League, and that is what we are doing with them.

"It is about Under-21 players gaining experience. We have got Kwame Thomas and Alefe Santos out on loan at Notts County."

Attacking midfielder Calero, 19, has made three substitute appearance for the Rams this season, scoring once.
